Description of Physical Characteristics:

Color:  Fairburn agate has alternating circular bands of fibrous chalcedony.  "holly leaf" shaped fortification bands  can alternate between yellowish brown with a narrower whitish band to  varying red bands of salmon or milky pink or black to gray bluish bands with the alternating narrower whitish bands.

Fairburn Agate is associated with the Chamberlain Pass Formation / Chadron Formation  or the Guernsey Formation (references are conflicting).  Originally identified on the Kern Ranch east of Fairburn, South Dakota.  Primary outcroppings occur on the Kern Ranch, French Creek Road in South Dakota, and throughout the Front Range and Hartville Uplift regions of Wyoming and the Black Hills of South Dakota extending from Sheridan County, Nebraska and eastward into Oglala County, South Dakota and Guernsey Lake, Wyoming (Guernsey Lake Formation) and Tee Pee Canyon in Custer County, Wyoming.
